Week 1: Famous Last Words

I cannot believe that the first week of my senior year of college is already over. Overall this week has been great and I have enjoyed this course so far. I am excited to be able to dig deeper and learn a lot more about what this class has to offer. One assignment that I particularly enjoyed this week was being able to select my favorite stories from the Un-Textbook. I loved being able to read stories that I recognized from when I was younger because it took me back to when I either reading or watching those stories on TV. One thing that I feel that I could definitely improve on however, is creativity. My least favorite assignment was the Storytelling because I do not particularly enjoy making things up out of the blue, but I am glad that I will be able to do more of that throughout the semester because I hope that it will help with my imagination. My other classes this week have been pretty boring honestly and unfortunately, I do not see any connections between any of my other classes with this one. Hopefully down the road I will be able to make some type of connection with my other classes and this one. I definitely think though that this course will be my most fun one throughout the semester. I am anxious to be able to learn about all of the different stories, some that I have heard before and most that I have never heard of. Another thing that I will be excited about will be being able to make connections with this course and with my trips that I took last summer. Overall, I am glad that I decided to enroll in this course. I think that it will end up being a great semester!

Week 1: Exploring the Un-Textbook

As I was going through all of the articles I found myself leaning more towards stories I had either heard as a child or stories that have been made into movies. I chose four different stories that really interested me and they all interested me for the same reason. The reason I chose these four stories is because I had either seen the Disney movie about them or read the story when I was little, so I think it would be really fun to be able to read and learn more about these stories in a different light. The four stories that I chose are:

Week 1: Storytelling

Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall;
Humpty Dumpty Had a Great Fall;
Three score men and three score more
Cannot place Humpty Dumpty as he was before

(Original nursery rhyme)

Humpty Dumpty was on a walk when he saw his best friend Jake. Jake was with his girlfriend, so Humpty Dumpty climbed onto the wall to spy on them.

-Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall-

Humpty was in a jealous rage because Jake was spending too much time with his new girlfriend. He yelled at Jake and said, "Jake and Savannah sitting in a tree k-i-s-s-i-n-g." Jake was enraged, so he grabbed a rock and threw it at Humpty Dumpty. While trying to avoid being hit by the rock, Humpty Dumpty lost his balance and tumbled to the ground.

- Humpty Dumpty had a great fall-

Humpty Dumpty let out a loud screech from the pain, and people from all over the park ran over to help him.

-Three score men and three score more-

Humpty Dumpty was so very injured to the point of no repair. Jake felt very guilty and sad as they were unable to help Humpty Dumpty be as good as new.

-Could not put Humpty as he was before-

Authors Note: This story is based on the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty" which is quoted there in the story; you can find the rhyme in The Nursery Rhyme Book, edited by Andrew Lang (1897). For this story, I came up with the idea from a good friend of mine, Suzanna Smith. She came up with this idea from a television show that she had been watching where a boy and girl were spending too much time together and one of their best friends got very jealous and it ended badly.

Week 1 Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Baleigh Davenport and I am a senior marketing major at the University of Oklahoma. I am a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, which takes up the majority of my time. I just recently got hired as the media intern at Ackerman McQueen for the semester in Oklahoma City, so I am very excited about being able to start working there. This past summer I interned with Box Talent Agency where I held the title of "Booking Intern." I basically assisted the VP in booking artists and bands for local venues and events. This past summer was definitely one for the books, I turned 21 in July, so my parents took me and three of my friends to Las Vegas for a long weekend and it was one of the funnest times of my life. Although I am not ready to leave this university, I am very excited about my final year at OU because the past three years have been the best time of my life. I am mostly excited about football season and being able to spend this time with my best friends. Unfortunately, I do not have a plan for when I graduate yet, but I hope to be able to stay in Oklahoma depending on where I am able to get a job. Other than that, I am very excited about being able to take this course, Mythology and Folklore, because it will be nice to learn things that are completely foreign to me and get away from the business classes every once in a while!

Week 1: Storybook Favorites

The three storybooks that I chose as my favorites were The Towers That Be, The Prince Diaries, and Nursery Rhymes Gone Wrong. I chose these three because I love being able to read things in a new perspective. For example, not many people would ever thing to tell the story of Rapunzel from the perspective of the tower's, also, no one ever tells stories about the prince, or for that matter, even cares about what the prince thinks because stories are almost always about the princesses. Finally, I think that the Nursery Rhymes Gone Wrong storybook idea is hilarious. I enjoyed reading these three storybooks because I could tell that the writers were being very creative with their choices. While reading these three stories, it sparked my interest in wanting to write something similar. I want to write a story from a different perspective that no one ever gets to see or hear from. However, one thing I feel could have improved their stories even more would be to have amped up the layout of the stories a little bit more, maybe with pictures and different colors, etc. I understand that it probably was difficult to try to find the pictures online that they wanted to portray their story, but that is the only thing that I feel could have made the stories even better! All in all, these stories have really helped me to decide what I will be interested in writing about when it comes time to write my own storybook for the course. I hope to be able to be as creative as the writers of these stories, but I am excited to be able to begin writing my own storybook.

Tanzania, Santorini, & Positano... My favorite places

Last summer I had the opportunity to take a vacation of a lifetime with my family to Europe and Africa. We started out on a 10 day Mediterranean Cruise which left out of Rome that went to Santorini, Mykonos, Athens, Istanbul, Ephesus, and Naples. After the cruise we spent 6 days in Rome and had the opportunity to go to several places around Italy. Once our trip ended in Rome, we flew to Tanzania, Africa for a 10 day safari. I was unable to limit myself to choose just one of my favorite places after being to all of these amazing places. All of the photos in this blog were taken by one of my family members or myself. The three places that I chose are Tanzania, Santorini, and Positano. Tanzania, Africa. Tanzania was a life changing experience. I got the opportunity to see many different types of animals and a whole new culture. All of the photos below have been taken by my cousin, Will Hugon. A few of the photos are from his camera and a few are from his iPhone.

(One of the gorgeous resorts that we stayed at in Tanzania)

(Photo of my whole family at a "Sundowner" dinner one evening) Santorini, Greece. Santorini is one of the places that we stopped on our cruise. Santorini is built on a cliff and was one of the most gorgeous places I had ever seen. I hope to have the opportunity to return one day!

(Amazing photo taken by my step sister) Positano, Italy. Positano was one of my favorite places that I got to travel to in Italy. On the way there, we got to drive down the Amalfi Coast, which was amazing also. Positano is a little town where everyone was so friendly and they are known especially for their lemons and gorgeous pottery. I got the chance to purchase many gorgeous pieces of painted pottery from a locally owned shop.

(The lemons in Positano were huge!)
